Crowns & Bridges

What are crowns and bridges?

Crowns and bridges are common tooth restorations that improve the appearance and function of your teeth after experiencing tooth decay, trauma, or tooth loss.

Crowns are caps that fit over your natural teeth, and look and feel just like surrounding teeth. Crowns at Park Family Dentistry are made of ceramic materials, making them much stronger than metal crowns.

Bridges often contain two crowns with an artificial tooth in between. The two crowns fit over your natural teeth, and the artificial tooth fills in the gap from a missing tooth to restore your smile.

When are crowns or bridges necessary?

Dr. Park may recommend a crown or bridge if you have teeth that are:

  • Loose
  • Missing
  • Discolored
  • Cracked
  • Misshapen
  • Crooked
  • Gapped
  • Too small
  • Decaying
  • Weak

To determine which tooth restoration best matches your needs, Dr. Park and his team review your medical and dental history, examine your mouth, and use dental X-rays. They discuss treatment options with you to find one that offers you the most desirable outcome and an aesthetically pleasing smile.

What happens during crown or bridge placement?

Crown or bridge placement is usually a multiple-step process. During your first appointment, Dr. Park prepares your tooth for a crown by reshaping it or building up the tooth, so a crown can fit over it properly.

He takes impressions of your teeth so a dental lab can create a custom permanent crown or bridge. You might receive temporary tooth restoration to wear in the meantime.

When your crown or bridge is ready, Dr. Park places it in your mouth to ensure a proper fit. He uses special dental cement to secure a crown or bridge in place permanently. Your new dental restoration may last up to 20 years or longer.

How should I care for my new crown or bridge?

To properly care for a new bridge or crown, brush your teeth twice daily using fluoride toothpaste. Floss every day and avoid chewing on ice or other hard objects. See your dental provider regularly for professional teeth cleanings and exams. Call Park Family Dentistry if you experience any unusual symptoms or if a crown or bridge becomes loose.

Don’t live with decay or other tooth damage that can progress to serious dental complications. Schedule an appointment with Park Family Dentistry over the phone or online today, to find out if a crown or bridge is right for you.
