What are fillings?

Fillings at Park Family Dentistry are made of unique tooth-colored materials. Your dentist uses fillings to restore damaged or decaying teeth to prevent complications. If Dr. Park detects a cavity in its early stage before it becomes a larger hole, a filling might be all that’s needed to treat the cavity and restore your tooth.

Will I require a filling?

A cavity is the main reason you may need a filling. Signs and symptoms of a cavity include:

  • Tooth pain
  • Pain when you bite down
  • Tooth sensitivity
  • Mild or sharp pain with eating
  • Tooth staining
  • Holes or pits in your teeth

Your dentist can detect cavities, or dental decay, during routine dental exams, but if you experience symptoms of a cavity, see your dentist right away for an evaluation.

What should I expect during my appointment?

Before getting a filling, Dr. Park examines your teeth and asks questions about your symptoms. He also takes dental X-rays to confirm you have a cavity. If you have a cavity and it requires treatment, a filling might be right for you.

Dr. Park first removes the decayed portion of your tooth and fills it with tooth-colored materials to protect it and prevent future decay. Getting a filling is fast and painless.

If you require a large filling, he may place a porcelain crown over the top of your tooth like a cap and secure it firmly in place using special dental cement. Getting a crown is often a two-step process, so you may receive a temporary crown while the dental lab creates a custom-made permanent crown for you.

How can I take care of my teeth?

To help prevent future tooth decay, take care of your teeth using good oral hygiene habits. Brush them two times a day using a fluoride toothpaste and floss every day. Eat lots of fruits and vegetables and avoid sugary foods and drinks whenever you can.

See the Park Family Dentistry team every six months for professional teeth cleanings and dental exams, to detect tooth decay early before serious complications develop. Schedule an appointment with Park Family Dentistry by phone or online today.
